Good Friends and Backpacking with Bugs – July 14th – 17th, 2016

From Loveland, CO we traveled north to Wheatland, WY, where we met up with ex-teammate/catcher Liz and her husband David. In addition to housing some spectacular friends, Wheatland is home to a surprisingly good grocery store. Since it was Thursday, we ate cake.

We left Wheatland in the morning and pressed on to Pinedale, WY were we met a savant national forest ranger who talked faster and in more detailed than either of us had every heard in our lives.  We caught about 10% of what she had told us before going up to the trailhead for our first backpacking trip of the season. About to depart for Hobbs Lake, an approx. 8 1/2 mile hike in, we attempted to move Bernard to a more appropriate parking spot. Bernard wasn’t having it. So instead, we worked on getting him to start all morning. After much persuasion, Bernie finally gave in and we were on our way. Through a continuous swarm of mosquitos, we hiked through the Wind River Range, contemplating how many bug bites were possible before out entire bodies started to swell in one giant lump. Despite the bugs, the area was gorgeous with more alpine lakes than you could count. After getting slightly lost at an unmarked lake we named, “Confusion Lake” we found a nice spot to camp for the night. The mosquitos persisted; however, and we were in our tent by 7:30 pm. Rather than battle the mosquitos for one more night we decided to hike out the next morning and continue north through Wyoming.
